The Hebrews were in a miserable state: forced to worship foreign gods, to forget God's promise of a good future, tormented, beaten, malnourished, degraded to slaves. From a human point of view, there was no hope. But God spoke into this situation, “I have heard your cries, seen your sufferings and know how you are doing.” These statements alone are gigantic. God is present. He knows how we are doing. He is not a god who sits somewhere on cloud nine and who does not know anything about our lives. He knows our situation. But is that enough? We might tell someone about our situation. An open, honest conversation. Perhaps talking to a pastor. It is good that someone else now knows about our situation. But nothing has changed yet. "If your attitude changes, your situation will also change.” I once heard this sentence stated by an over motivated success coach. Sometimes that may be true. But there are situations where that is not enough, and God knows that. He came down from heaven. God does not stay at a distance and He does not leave it up to beautiful words. God Himself enters the ring for us. He promises to bring the situation to an end and at the same time, He gives us a new perspective. How often have I experienced this in my own life? God is ready to fight for us and to free us from our personal prisons. Nevertheless, it does not look like a victory at the beginning. Now, at this moment, Canaanites, Hittites ... invincible opponents are still living there. God does not only appear in our lives when everything is going well, when we are out of the worst, and to retroactively tell us, “That was me.” God gives us His promises and perspective, while we still do not see a way out. ## ACTION STEP Make a list with the "opponents" who seem to make it impossible for you to enter into this “land” and bring this list to God in prayer during the next 39 days. ##### Mike Schmidt, ICF Reutlingen
