Wilderness (from suffering to solace)

Friday – 37 days before Easter

Matthew 4:1-11

At the very end of this passage — after long days of fasting, hunger, weariness, and the devil’s assaults — we read this:

“Then the devil went away, and angels came and took care of Jesus.”

The Father did not leave Jesus on his own. Scripture and truth protected Jesus. Then angels comforted and cared for Jesus. Many people have ideas about what and who angels are. We know they are God’s messengers who often deliver important news. We know their sudden appearance often frightens people. And from this story, we know they deliver care and encouragement.

As you read the story one more time today, note how the Spirit and the Father are present throughout. It may seem that the devil has a starring role, but in the end, he is soundly defeated by the faithful love and obedient actions of Jesus. Our Almighty God is present even when we cannot see or sense it. He protects us, even when we feel weak and alone. He comforts and cares for us, even when we feel weary and discouraged. James writes:

“God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him” (James 1:12).
