John begins his eyewitness perspective into the life and lessons of Jesus. John’s Gospel was written as an authoritative statement to proclaim and defend the truth, affirm Jesus as the Son of God and strengthen the faith of all people. This was written at a time where dangerous heresy was spreading, led by a Jew named Cerinthus. In these chapters, we see Jesus continuously providing instructions on how we are to live with an eternal mindset, including the first of seven ‘I am’ statements in John’s Gospel. Word of Jesus’ miracles and teachings are spreading, and the people are divided, many still refusing to believe.
