The Passion

ڕۆژی36 لە 57

As the meal continues, Jesus takes bread and wine - everyday items - and gives them extraordinary meaning. “This is my body… this is my blood of the covenant.” With these words, He transforms the Passover into the Lord’s Supper. No longer does the meal point back to Egypt and lambs, but forward to the cross and the Saviour.

The bread speaks of His body broken in our place. The cup proclaims His blood poured out “for many for the forgiveness of sins.” (Matthew 26:28, ESV) For centuries, God’s people had remembered the blood of lambs painted on doorframes, protecting them from judgment. Now Jesus declares that His own blood will shield and save. The old covenant carved on stone tablets could never cleanse the heart, but Jeremiah had promised a new covenant written deep within, where sins would be remembered no more. At the table, Jesus announces that this new covenant is sealed, not with ink, but with His own blood.

Think of the staggering grace here. Jesus knows His friends will scatter in fear. He knows betrayal is near. Yet He breaks bread and offers the cup - not only to them, but to us. He gives Himself, freely and fully, to people who could never earn such a gift.

Every time we share in the Lord’s Supper, we are nourished afresh by that grace. We don’t come with achievements in our hands but empty, ready to receive what only He can give: forgiveness, belonging, and hope. His body and blood assure us that our past is pardoned, our present sustained, and our future secure.

Today, ponder this: In what ways can I come to the Lord’s table with a heart fully open to His grace and renewal?
