The Lord’s Supper is more than just a remembrance of the past. It is also a promise of the future. After giving the bread and cup, Jesus says, “I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” (Matthew 26:29, ESV) Every communion meal is a rehearsal for a greater feast - the wedding supper of the Lamb.
Revelation 19 gives us a picture of that day: multitudes rejoicing, a bride beautifully prepared, and the Lamb at the center of it all. It is not a small table in an upper room, but a vast banquet filled with joy, celebration, and glory. This feast will be a moment when sin, sorrow, and death are fully overcome, and every tear is wiped away.
The Lord’s Supper reminds us that what Jesus accomplished on the cross was not just for history, but for eternity. It transforms how we experience the present. Each time we take the bread and cup, we lift our eyes beyond the struggles and the ordinary moments of life. We are reminded that God’s plan is not thwarted by weakness or failure. We do not participate in this meal because we have earned it, but because Christ has already earned it for us.
Today, ponder this: How can I allow the gift of the Lord's Supper to renew my heart today and shape the way I live, love, and hope?
