The disciples are busy preparing the Passover meal, as Jewish families had done for centuries. They would remember how God rescued His people from Egypt, how the blood of a lamb marked them out from judgment and secured their freedom. Yet as they gather around the table, Jesus reshapes the story. The focus is no longer on Egypt, but on Himself. He is the true Passover Lamb whose death brings ultimate salvation.
Even more striking is the tension at the table. Jesus knows betrayal is near, and He names it openly. While the disciples are stunned, Jesus is not. He is calm and composed because none of this is outside His Father’s plan. The betrayal, the suffering, the cross - all of it is part of God’s perfect rescue mission for the world.
Notice the disciples’ reaction: “Surely not I, Lord?” Each one feels the sting of the possibility. Each one knows the weakness of their own heart. Judas may be the betrayer, but the rest will also falter and flee. Around this table sits not a company of the strong, but a circle of the frail. And yet, Jesus still breaks bread with them. He still shares the cup. His love extends even to those who will fail Him.
That’s good news for us. We, too, come to the table weak, wavering, inconsistent. We, too, are capable of denying or betraying Jesus in a hundred subtle ways. But the Lamb of God does not push us away. His body is broken for us. His blood is poured out for us. Salvation is not about our loyalty to Him, but His commitment to us.
So when life feels uncertain, remember the table. Remember the Lamb who was slain. And remember that your God is sovereign and good. He welcomes frail disciples still.
Today, ponder this: Where in my life do I need to trust that God is in control, even when everything feels shaky?
