Attribute #9 - Righteousness

For the LORD is righteous (Psalm 11:7)

The Bible repeatedly affirms that God is righteous by nature. Psalm 11 vividly portrays this attribute, describing how the Lord loves righteous deeds. David, under attack from enemies, expresses confidence in God’s justice: “The LORD is righteous; He loves righteous deeds. The upright will see His face” (Psalm 11:7, CSB). That is, since God is righteous by nature, He loves those who practice righteousness. His countenance (or face) shines upon those who look to Him receiving current and future blessing.

Since we know that God is righteous, how do we learn more about this particular perfection of the Father? We learn about God’s righteous character through the natural revelation of creation and then the special revelation as found in the Scriptures. In Psalm 19, King David, segues from God’s general revelation to the world through creation (Psalm 19:1–6) to the special revelation of His Word revealing His righteous character (Psalm 19:7–11). Since “the law of the LORD is perfect,” it reflects His stellar righteous character and serves as a just standard to reveal man’s sinfulness (Romans 3:19-20).

The incarnation of Jesus provides the clearest revelation of God’s righteousness. As John writes, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father” (John 14:9). Jesus took on flesh not only to die for the sin of the world but to reveal the invisible God’s righteous character to us. “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). Jesus, the Lamb of God, perfectly embodies God’s righteousness, offering salvation through His sacrifice.

Scripture, consisting of the Old and New Testaments, not only reflects God’s righteousness but also equips believers to live according to His standards (2 Timothy 3:16–17). God’s Word, inspired by the Holy Spirit, provides wisdom, correction, and instruction in righteousness.

Employment Point: God is righteous and His righteous nature is revealed in His Word.
