How can we display the attribute of Love?

In response to God’s love, we are called to display our love for God in tangible ways. This involves:

Obedience: We demonstrate our love for God by keeping His commandments. Jesus says, “If you love Me, keep My commandments” (John 14:15). Likewise, John exhorts us to keep God’s commandments which shouldn’t be viewed as a cumbersome obligation but a joyful expression of devotion (1 John 5:3). During their time together, Jesus’s apostles came to know His love, provision, care, kindness, and compassion. Yet obedience to Him describes the necessary ingredient for friendship (John 15:14). Let’s demonstrate our love for God through obedience and loyalty to Him.

Loving God’s Word: The writer of Psalm 119 experientially knows that God’s living Word brings ineffable joy (Psalm 119:16) and love (Psalm 119:97). Delighting in and meditating on Scripture fosters a deeper relationship with God and keeps us spiritually strong.

Loving Others: A much-quoted statement by Moses appears in Leviticus 19:18, “you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” This command is affirmed by Jesus answering a scribe, who asks, “Which is the first commandment of all?” (Mark 12:28–31). In Luke’s account, Jesus goes on to tell the parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30–37), where He expands the concept of "neighbor" teaching that love transcends cultural and social barriers.

Loving our enemy: In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus teaches His early disciples the importance of loving one’s enemies. Jesus instructs believers to love, bless, do good, and pray for those who oppose them, reflecting God’s impartial love for all (Matthew 5:43–45).

Loving One Another: The New Testament contains several “one another” statements such as 1 Peter 4:8 which calls us to fervently (constantly) love fellow believers. In 1 John 4:7-9, John writes, “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God”. The focused sacrificial love that John wrote about isn’t a natural love but a divinely dispensed love.

As the Father demonstrated His love for us by parting with His most precious possession (John 3:16), we can demonstrate our love for God by obedience, loving His word, loving our neighbor, loving our enemy, and loving one another. Let’s imitate the God of love by being loving ourselves!

Employment Point: We must demonstrate our love for God.
