Attribute #7 - Faithfulness

He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it (1 Thessalonians 5:24).

God is faithful to His Word, works, and people. In Psalm 119:86, the psalmist testifies, “All Your commandments are faithful.” “Commandments” is one of ten synonyms for the Word of God in Psalm 119. The writer of the longest psalm gives witness to the Lord’s faithfulness to the Scripture.

Scripture itself is God-breathed. Second Timothy 3:16–17 documents “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God…”. Paul uses the adjective translated “inspiration of God” specifying the living nature of Scripture. Truly God’s Word is alive, beneficial for ministry, and penetrates the recesses of the heart. “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword…” (Hebrews 4:12). We should revere the entire Bible because God is faithful to His living Word!

You can depend upon God’s Word because all its prophecies either have been or will be fulfilled. In Matthew 5:17–18, Jesus emphasized strongly that He doesn’t compete with the Old Testament Law but fulfills it perfectly. Eternal are the very words of God, so they are perpetually faithful. “Forever, O LORD,” records the psalmist, “Your word is settled in heaven” (Psalm 119:89).

As God is faithful to His Word, He is faithful to His works. Today you and I exist because God remains steadfast to His works. In Psalm 33:4–9 the author spotlights God’s creative works as done through His Word, which is called “right” or “upright” from the Hebrew and “done in truth” or as the New American Standard Bible translates “in faithfulness”. Marvel how God’s works are in partnership with His Word.

Despite humanity’s unfaithfulness, God remains loyal to His people as demonstrated in His merciful restoration of Judah after their exile (Lamentations 3:22–27). This steadfastness assures us that He will complete His work in us, as Paul writes, “He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it” (1 Thessalonians 5:24). Faithfully God will fully conform His children to the glorious image of Jesus Christ (Philippians 1:6).

Employment Point: God is faithful to His Word, works, and people.
