Attribute #6 - Truth
I am the way, the truth… (John 14:6)
In eternity past the Trinity had a holy huddle determining the means for individuals to be redeemed. Paul instructs Pastor Titus as follows: “in hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began” (Titus 1:2). The giver of everlasting life does not have the ability to disclose falsehoods; He Himself is perfect and never heralds a lie. Agur profoundly shares, “Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him” (Proverbs 30:5).
In John 1:14-18, John pens that Jesus, “… full of grace and truth …”, came to declare the Father to us. We should take full advantage of the Son’s declaration about the Father and diligently pursue knowing the God of truth. He is the true God desiring us to understand Him experientially. In Jesus’ priestly prayer, He states, “And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent” (John 17:3). The present tense verb translated “know” refers to an intimate knowledge. The adjective “true” means real and genuine.
A personal relationship with the God of truth is developed through His Word. The psalmist writes, “Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and Your law is truth” (Psalm 119:142). Observe how later the author of Psalm 119 connects God’s presence with the Bible. He pens, “You are near, O LORD, and all Your commandments are truth” (Psalm 119:151). Then he highly exalts the integrity of Scripture, “The entirety of Your word is truth, and every one of Your righteous judgments endures forever” (Psalm 119:160).
Jesus masterfully proclaims the liberating power of applied truth. He discloses, “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32). Rightly, Jesus is the way to the Father, the truth who reveals the essence of His Father, and the giver of eternal life, which sets the captive free.
Employment Point: Know the God of truth.
