Per tercera vegada el Senyor va cridar Samuel, i ell va anar on era Elí i li digué: “Sóc aquí. Em cridaves?” Llavors Elí comprengué que era el Senyor qui cri-dava el noi. I digué a Samuel: “Torna-te’n a dor-mir, i, si sents que et criden, diràs: Parla, Senyor, que el teu servent escolta.” I Samuel se’n tornar a jeure al seu lloc. Aleshores va venir el Senyor, es va aturar i va cridar com les altres vegades: “Samuel! Samuel!” I ell respongué: “Parla, que el teu servent escolta.”
