Living One: A Study of Integrity in Hebrews

DAY 4 OF 15

Day 4: Touched and transformed

One of the most incredible revelations in Isaiah’s vision is this: the Holy One does not retreat from the frailty and imperfection of humanity. Rather, he stoops in mercy, drawing us near—not to condemn, but to make us holy.

When Isaiah beholds God’s glory and his own inability to cleanse or sanctify himself, a moment of divine mystery unfolds. An angel takes a burning coal from the altar of heaven and touches it to his lips. In this gesture lies a wealth of prophetic meaning—fire from the altar igniting purity and perfection where there was none.

The burning coal is a powerful foreshadowing of Christ Himself—the “single offering” that would touch and transform humanity. In Hebrews 10:12–14 (NIV), the author outlines the defining features of Christ’s sacrifice:

  1. It was offered once for all time.
  2. It culminated in Christ seated at the right hand of God (v. 12).
  3. It involved one singular sacrifice (vv. 12, 14).
  4. It perfected forever those for whom it was made (v. 14).

As we behold the glory of God in the face of Jesus, we are being transformed into his likeness. By faith, we are united with him in that once-for-all offering. The burning sacrifice of his blood touches and transforms every fragment of our imperfection.

The Greek verb translated “perfected” appears in the perfect active indicative—a tense that speaks of an action fully completed in the past, with effects that remain operative in the present. It is a finished work, still unfolding in us.

Jesus has fully paid for and removed sin, making peace between God and his people. Because of this, we now have complete forgiveness, the right to enter heaven, a future filled with hope and joy, and a restored relationship with the Father.

Prayer reflection

Lord Jesus, thank you for being the once-for-all offering that touches the depths of my brokenness. Thank you that, by your blood, I am perfected—not by my effort, but by your finished work.
