Living One: A Study of Integrity in Hebrews

DAY 15 OF 15

Day 15: Realigning our lives – from my head to my hands

A practical faith

The Christian faith is an active, doing faith. It’s a relationship with God our Father, made possible by our Saviour Jesus Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit.

God revealed himself through the incarnation of his Son and so “came near” by sharing the human experience. Jesus made a life lived in fellowship with the Father and the Spirit very practical and impactful. This implies that living daily in close connection with Jesus doesn’t boil down to something abstract or philosophical. Rather, as the Holy Spirit daily transforms my thought life, I discover the joy of real, meaningful, flesh-and-blood moments with others, where my words and conduct bless them.

For the good of others

How would you describe your contribution to conversations in general - from serious, work-related meetings to campfire chats with loved ones? Paul writes that when we speak to others we should have something specific in mind. Imagine the picture of an archer aiming at a target. The goal is to hit the bullseye!

Similarly, our words should always be directed at a specific target, or goal: “… what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” (Ephesians 4:29 NIV)

Prayer reflection

Lord Jesus, I know my words are often misguided and simply fly out of my mouth without a thought to their effect on my listeners. I repent of this and thank you for your ongoing work of sanctification in my life.

May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. (Psalm 19:14 NIV)
