Gospel Ministry by God's Grace

Paul was a man strengthened by grace. From one trial after another, Paul was strengthened. Now, in view of his impending death, Paul encourages Timothy to carry on the gospel ministry by grace. As Christ’s ambassador, Paul implores Timothy to persevere in the work of the Great Commission, making disciples who will obey all that they have learned. God has already set these men apart. It is now Timothy’s job to find these men, according to the standards Paul has set forth for him to follow, and teach them to stand their ground on the immovable rock of Christ, even in the face of a spiritual earthquake. According to the passages in today’s reading, what does Paul say faithful men should look like? And, how do we know they have true faith? We are not all called to be elders and overseers, but all of us should desire and practice these attributes, for true faith is demonstrated in our deeds and our character (Ti. 1:6-9).

What do you need to keep in the forefront of your mind so that you can be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus each day? We have all been called to carry out the Great Commission: “And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age'" (Mt. 28:18-20 ESV).

Where has the Lord placed you? To whom has the Lord sent you? Consider all of the people the Lord has put in your life. Where do you frequent each week? Who are your neighbors? Friends? Family members? What unreached people group has the Lord placed upon your heart?

Ask the Lord to continue to grow your heart for the lost near and far. Ask Him to provide the helpful tools you need to help you pray.

Strengthened by Grace

Paul is in dire circumstances, yet remains unwavering in his faith. While writing to Timothy from prison, he encourages him to draw strength from the grace found only in Christ. Paul reminds Timothy—and all of us—that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-discipline. May this plan from 2 Timothy chapters 1-3 inspire and strengthen you as you seek to remain steadfast and guard the gospel.
