Give thanks! A daily routine

“Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good, for His steadfast love endures forever” (Psalm 136:1 ESV).

It is a recurring refrain in Psalm 136: God is good!

In the Psalms, we find believers' personal responses to God's words and deeds. And although they were written centuries ago, the feelings and thoughts of the writers remain recognisable to believers of all times. God is good. How fitting it is that this is passed on to every generation. Thus, believers of all times and places and in all circumstances remain connected to each other in the same praise of God: He is good. Psalm 136 can be read as a kind of history lesson. As the history of God with His people is told, we read repeatedly: Praise God, for He is good. Nobody does what He does. He is the Creator of all that lives and knows what He is doing (vs 4-9).

  • He delivered His people Israel from the oppression of the Egyptians and led the Israelites through the desert to the land promised to their forefathers (vs 10-22).
  • He looked after His people, small as they were, and protected them (vs 22-24).
  • He takes care of everything that lives (vs 25).

God is good for every new generation. Praise Him!

Question: Try to list all the blessings you have received from God in your life. And in the manner of Psalm 136, what can you say about God between each blessing?

Thanksgiving: God of my life, I praise and thank You, King of heaven and earth. You alone are good. Today I thank You for ...
