John 5 | the Son can only do what he sees the Father doing

There is an eternal, ontological union between the Father and the Son and the Spirit. They are distinguishable as three persons in the one God, but indivisible in divine being and purpose. And what the Father wills, the Son wills. What the Father works, the Son works. When we see what the Son does we see what the Father does. Jesus reveals the Father in who he is, how he is, what he says, and what he does. And don’t miss that Jesus is doing stuff, he does because God is doing. Later the apostle Peter described his time on earth with Jesus, “he went around doing good.” God is active not passive. He is always at work. When Philip asked “show us the Father” Jesus replied “If you have seen me you have seen the Father”. Jesus’ works were not done because the Father told him to do them – but because he and the Father are One. We see what the Father is doing by seeing what Jesus is doing. If we are to be one with Jesus, the question for us today is: what are you doing?
