“ My flesh and my heart fail; But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”
- Psalm 73:26 (NKJ)
The word “portion” has always stood out to me in this psalm. Perhaps I like it because it conjures up a beautiful picture of a perfectly triangular and delicious piece of lemon meringue pie.
Unfortunately, as I’ve grown older, the word “portion” has become associated with restraint and limited amounts of my favourite foods! The good news, however, is that the word “portion” has another meaning in the Bible. It means “a person’s destiny or lot.”
Part of my destiny turned out to be an incredible job which I undertook for many years, and which I never expected to have, in which God brought together all of my gifts, beliefs and past experiences to further His Kingdom and to help others. But even more so, isn’t it wonderful to know that our destiny or lot is to choose God for our whole portion; to have our hearts strengthened by Him even when our bodies fail, and to live in His love both in our earthly walk but more so when we step into eternity with Him. So whilst a piece of our favourite pie is great, God’s destiny as our portion far outshines anything else.
So choose Jesus as your portion, as your destiny, as your lot, as your all!
Prayer:
Dear Lord, thank You that in choosing You as my portion and destiny, I can be strengthened by You at all times, but especially when my flesh and my heart fail. Help me to remember to draw near to You, to choose to put my trust in You always and to remember to tell others of your wonderful works. Amen.
