Mighty Name of Jesus - Hope Darst

One of the most common phrases you will hear from Christians in their everyday life and especially during a time of prayer are these powerful words, “and we pray this in the mighty name of Jesus”! It’s so common, I think we can often forget just how powerful and how much authority we have when declaring the name of Jesus.

Scripture is full of declaring just how powerful His name is. Salvation is found in His name (Acts 4:12, Rom. 10:13). We are baptized in His name (Matt. 28:19). Healing is found in His name (Acts 3:6, 3:16, 4:10). We are justified in His name (1 Cor. 6:11). Demons bow and submit to His name (Luke 10:17). Everything we do is done in His name (Col. 3:17).

When we wrote this song, I was personally in a season of praying and believing for my daughter’s healing. Upon gathering to pray and ask the Lord about what songs we should be writing for the church at large, our pastor encouraged us to write songs that could be prayers and declarations for the body of Christ to sing.

I resonated with this deeply as a believer and a mother, depending on the truth of God’s word and the power of His name to be the authority in which I prayed over my daughter. Why? Because there is no other name that holds power to save, heal, restore or deliver other than the name of Jesus. When you and I become children of God, we inherit His name and all the authority that comes with it. My children have their father’s last name, and they know that, as a result, they have full access to all he owns. Jesus’s name owns everything. In conquering sin and death, being raised from the grave, reuniting us with the Father, signifying the end of sin’s barrier and granting us full access, and now sitting on the throne next to God, He holds ALL POWER and ALL AUTHORITY. And we have access to all that He owns. So we pray in His name alone. It’s a sign of surrender and trust. We are submitting ourselves to His will and His authority. It’s a posture that recognizes where our help comes from.

There are many times throughout our lives when we don’t know what or how to pray. This is where the word of God becomes our anchor, our strength and our truth no matter what we are facing. Our hope is this song can pick up where you run out of knowing what to say. The lyrics of this song are full of the promises of God’s word and the authority we have in Jesus Christ. So when you pray, remind yourself that everything you will ever need is found in the Mighty Name of Jesus…

In the Mighty Name of Jesus, I pray (Ephesians 1:15-23)
Calling on the power of heaven, I proclaim (Matthew 28:18-20)

In the mighty name of Jesus, I know
All the power of fear and darkness, must go (Colossians 1:13)
Every key to every victory I hold (1 Corinthians 15:57)
In the mighty name of Jesus I will not fear, I will not fear (Psalm 122: 6-8, Psalm 23:4)
When the enemy comes near (Psalms 91)
On the doorframe of my life (Revelation 12:11)
Is the blood of Jesus Christ (Exodus 12:13)

There’s an army of angels here (Psalm 34:7, Psalm 91:1-16)
I’m protected on all sides (1 Kings 5:4, Psalm 32:7)
