Last to Leave - Jessie Early
“Last to Leave” is really a song about devotion. The chorus pulls from the story where Mary breaks the alabaster jar of perfume at Jesus' feet. This story is such a powerful example of devotion to Jesus. While this is such a beautiful picture, Judas accuses her of being wasteful or that the money from that could have been “given to the poor”- something that on paper was a good thing, but the motivation of his heart was that he was a thief. But Jesus says that “she has done a beautiful thing to me. For you will always have the poor with you…but you will not always have me” (Matthew 26:6-7)
It’s no secret that our culture is busy- even with things that are often good! But I love that Psalm 84:4 says “Blessed are those who dwell in your house, ever singing your praise.” We are designed for the presence of God, we are designed for worship, and where to us this can feel uncomfortable or counter-cultural, the Psalm says there is blessing in it.
This song invites us to be a people that throughout our lives create space to sit at the feet of Jesus, to worship, and to wait. Even if it means being the last one, or putting off something that in the world’s perspective is “productive,” we will be devoted to God, to His presence, and to His agenda.
Take a minute to just invite Jesus into this moment.
Lord, let us be people
who are fully devoted to you
who make space for you
who surrender our time to your agenda instead of our own
who linger in your presence
who dwell in your house
who wait on you
who worship you
