Seasons of Preparation

Have you ever thought to yourself: When is it my turn? When thoughts like those hit, we need to remember that in God’s Kingdom, sometimes the path to our dreams comes through serving someone else's. Joseph had his own God-given dream of leadership and influence, but that dream only unfolded as he interpreted Pharaoh’s dream. The dream about the seven healthy cows being devoured by seven skinny ones seemed far from Joseph’s vision of greatness. Yet, by serving Pharaoh’s dream, Joseph stepped into the very purpose God designed for him.

Some of us are striving to build our own platforms or chase our own ambitions, thinking we have to go it alone. But maybe God has sovereignly placed us exactly where we need to be—not for our own dreams initially but to faithfully support the vision of those around us. In doing so, we may discover that the fulfillment of our dreams comes through faithfulness right where we’re at.

Let’s back up Joseph’s story. His brothers never would have bowed to him had he not been in Egypt. He wouldn’t have been in the position of leadership without the prison, and he wouldn’t have been in prison without being lied about by Potiphar’s wife. And he wouldn’t have been in Potiphar’s house if his brothers hadn’t sold him into slavery. What looked like struggle and suffering wasn’t keeping Joseph from his destiny—it was preparing him for it. Maybe your struggle isn’t a detour. Maybe it’s God positioning you for what’s next.

Joseph wasn’t doing what we might call “spiritual” work. He wasn’t a priest or prophet. He started as a slave, worked his way up to middle management, and served under an ungodly boss in a foreign land. Yet Joseph worked as if he were working for the Lord.

Remember the verse in Colossians 3:23: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” Joseph understood this. He wasn’t ultimately working for Potiphar or Pharaoh—he was working for God. And because Joseph worked for God, he became an excellent worker for those around him (whether they deserved it or not). That’s the same for us. Working for God means we give our best to our employers, serve with integrity, and let our work become an act of worship.

Even the mundane can take on a new purpose when we see it through this lens. Your work isn’t just a job—it’s a mission field. God has placed you where you are for a reason. Serve faithfully, give your best, and trust God to bring your dreams to pass through the seasons when you’re serving someone else’s.

Prayer:

Lord, help me to be faithful where I am right now. Teach me to serve with integrity and excellence, trusting that you are working through this season to prepare me for what’s next. Amen.
