Be Faithful in Your Now

When Joseph first arrived at Potiphar’s house, he would have been the newest slave and, by default, would have gotten the worst jobs. Joseph—the one who had big dreams for his life—was probably given the lowest assignment. But he must have done those assignments with great diligence because soon his responsibilities increased. He might have been assigned the dirtiest, most thankless jobs, but he performed them with excellence, and excellence always increases influence. His faithfulness in the small things increased his influence, leading to greater things.

This principle from the life of Joseph echoes throughout Scripture. Jesus said, “Whoever is faithful with very little will also be faithful with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much” (Luke 16:10). Faithfulness in the small things prepares us for greater opportunities. It’s not about waiting for the perfect job, season, or circumstance—it’s about serving well where you are now. Joseph’s life teaches us to be faithful in our now. Whatever your “now” is, be faithful there.

Joseph’s journey from the pit to the palace wasn’t just about him. God used Joseph’s trials to save a nation and his own family. At the end of his journey, Joseph could say to his brothers, “What you meant for evil against me; God meant it for good…” (Genesis 50:20). Similarly, God is working behind the scenes in your life for a greater purpose—even in moments when you feel overlooked and forgotten.

Faithfulness in the small things is the foundation for greater things. If you’re not faithful with the job you have, why would God give you a job with more responsibility? If you're not faithful with the money you have, why would God give you more? It wouldn’t be wise on God’s part. But if you’re faithful where you are, God will get you where you need to go. Maybe you feel stuck in a job, relationship, or season of life that feels insignificant or frustrating. Remember this: If you’re not faithful in the prison, you won’t be ready for the palace.

Prayer:

God, thank you for the reminder of the power of being faithful in the small things. Help me to respond like Joseph did, even when my tasks seem menial. Help me to be faithful with my job, my duties, my responsibilities, and my relationships so you can take me to a greater level. Amen.
