Inheritance money can bring out the worst in people. We see that in today’s story when the youngest son wanted his share early — before his father passed away. The father allowed his son to take the money and learn important — and painful — lessons for himself. We all crave independence and the freedom to make our own decisions. Sometimes we humble ourselves, and other times we might harden our hearts in bitterness and resentment, like the older brother did. God responds with grace and love in every situation — more than we could even imagine. We too, are like these brothers — longing for money, success, and acknowledgment. We may even try to get them through illegitimate means. We don’t deserve mercy and grace, but our heavenly Father freely gives it.
