Inheriting the Nations Jesus the Great Intercessor, in His high priestly prayer in John 17, requested of His Father that His disciples would be one, “that the world may know that You have sent Me” (John 17:23). And so it was that the early Church, made one by the Spirit of God and understanding the fulfillment of God’s redemptive purposes through His anointed Messiah, prayed: “Give us boldness to speak the word of God.” Their intercession joined that of the Great Intercessor, and the Lord heard and answered their request. Filled with the Holy Spirit, they proclaimed the gospel boldly and became witnesses not only to their fellow Jews, but to the Gentiles as well. Nations became the inheritance of the Messiah through them! Students of Christian missions tell us there are nearly 24,000 distinct “nations” or “people groups” in our world. Let us ask the Lord that for the sake of His Son, Jesus Christ, disciples be made from each of these “nations” and become a part of His inheritance.
