As children, we are taught the Golden Rule, spoken by Jesus in Matthew 7:12: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. Basically, treat others the way you would want them to treat you, or even greater still treat others the way the Lord has treated you.

James references obedience to the love commandment as fulfilling the royal law—the law endorsed by Jesus, our Lord of Lords and King of Kings. To show partiality, or favouritism, because of one’s status or wealth is in direct conflict with this royal law.

The Lord loves each of His children deeply and does not separate us into divisions, or ranking categories. In Colossians 3:11, Paul tells us, “Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all.”

The Lord loves us equally and desires for us to hold fast to our faith, acting in obedience to Him and love for one another, setting His royal law as our standard.

Thank you, Lord, for Your gracious and merciful love, a love that is endless and unconditional. Forgive us, Father, for where we have failed in our obedience to You and our judgments of others have been greater than our love for one another. Help us, Holy Spirit, to walk strong in our faith with the royal law of Christ as our standard.
