How Will You be Remembered?

How will you be remembered?

It’s an interesting question. There are a variety of answers we’d be okay with regarding how our legacy is carried on. But the truth is, it will be carried on. We will be remembered somehow.

The final verse of Esther doesn’t end with Esther herself, but with a quiet, steady man of faith—Mordecai. He’s not the flashiest figure in the book. He doesn’t command armies or perform miracles. Yet in the end, Mordecai stands second only to the king in one of the most powerful empires of the ancient world.

Why?

Because of his consistent, courageous, godly character.

These verses tell us that Mordecai was held in high esteem, not because he chased power, but because he used it well. He worked for the good of his people and spoke up for their welfare. That’s what godly leadership looks like. It’s not about titles, applause, or control. It’s about responsibility, advocacy, and service.

Too often, leadership is confused with dominance. But Christ-like leadership looks more like Mordecai’s: wise, humble, sacrificial. He didn’t seek to build his own kingdom—he sought the good of others, even when it cost him. He guided Esther through her rise to the throne. He uncovered a plot against the king. He stood firm when Haman’s rage threatened. And when power finally came, he didn’t use it to settle scores but to bring justice and peace.

Men, this kind of leadership is desperately needed—in families, churches, workplaces, and communities. You don’t need to be in charge of an empire to live like Mordecai. You just need to live with purpose.

Ask yourself: Who benefits from your strength? Are you using your influence—big or small—for the good of others? Do people around you feel seen, protected, and supported because of your presence?

Mordecai’s legacy didn’t come from one grand moment. It came from a life marked by faithfulness. Day by day, choice by choice, he built trust and lived for something greater than himself.

That’s what real impact looks like.

We may never be second to a king, but we are called to be men who reflect the heart of the King—Jesus—who came not to be served but to serve (Matthew 20:28). When we use our strength to lift others, speak up for the vulnerable, and live with integrity, we follow in Mordecai’s footsteps—and Christ’s.

Prayer: Father, help me to be a man of integrity and service. Teach me to use my influence—however great or small—for the good of others. May I lead with wisdom, speak up for those in need, and live in a way that honors You. Amen.

Reflection: What kind of legacy are you building? Are you using your influence to serve others and work for their good—or only your own?
