1 CorinthiansНамуна

It is no wonder the Corinthians were so fixated on spiritual leaders, considering their environment: Corinth hosted rhetoric competitions. The victors of these verbal contests were known throughout the city—veritable superstars. They persuaded people with their eloquence and had their own followings. The Corinthians transferred this exact mindset to the church: preachers were compared, evaluated, and celebrated.
Paul makes it clear that the gospel operates very differently. The message of the cross does not live by brilliant rhetoric or clever arguments—at first glance, it is even nonsensical and offensive, at least from a human perspective. In a culture where the art of speaking was highly esteemed, the message of a crucified Messiah appeared as folly. How could a criminal on a cross be the Savior of the world? But that is precisely its power: it works not through human wisdom, but through God’s intervention.
Not clever words, but the Holy Spirit changes human hearts. Therefore, it makes no sense to define yourself by human leaders or to be divided over them.
For Reflection
We can try to explain the message to people—with the best of intentions. But if God himself does not work through his Holy Spirit, our efforts remain fruitless. This realization brings two things with it:
First: Humility. It does not depend on me. Second: Courage. It does not depend on me.

About this Plan

Corinth was a major port city in ancient Greece—a center of commerce, religious diversity, and known for loose living. Precisely there, a young church was growing, learning to live out their faith in a secular environment. Many issues they faced remain relevant today. In this reading plan, you'll see how Paul addresses the early believers’ challenges and shows what it means to live as a church, strengthen one another, and use the Spirit’s gifts. It’s about genuine love, handling conflict, the power of the resurrection, and how faith in Christ can transform everyday life.
