Vtedy kráľovský miestodržiteľ Nehemiáš, kňaz a zákonník Ezdráš i leviti, ktorí poučovali ľud, povedali všetkému ľudu: „Tento deň je zasvätený Hospodinovi, vášmu Bohu. Nesmúťte a neplačte!“ Všetok ľud totiž plakal, keď počul slová zákona. Ďalej im povedal: „Choďte, jedzte dobroty, pite sladké nápoje a pošlite niečo aj tým, čo nemajú nič pripravené, lebo tento deň je zasvätený nášmu Pánovi. Nebuďte smutní, lebo radosť Hospodina je vaším útočiskom.“ Aj leviti upokojovali všetok ľud: „Utíšte sa, lebo tento deň je posvätný. Nebuďte smutní!“ Vtedy všetok ľud odišiel jesť, piť, posielať dary a usporiadať veľkú radostnú slávnosť, lebo pochopil slová, ktoré mu oznámili.
