Keď potom Herodes zbadal, že ho mudrci oklamali, veľmi sa nahneval. Dal povraždiť v Betleheme a na celom okolí všetkých chlapcov do dvoch rokov, a to podľa času, na ktorý sa dôkladne povypytoval mudrcov. Vtedy sa splnilo, čo povedal prorok Jeremiáš: Hlas bolo počuť v Ráme, plač a veľký nárek. Ráchel oplakávala svoje deti a nechcela sa dať potešiť, lebo ich už niet. Keď Herodes zomrel, Pánov anjel sa vo sne zjavil Jozefovi v Egypte a povedal: „Vstaň, vezmi dieťatko a jeho matku a choď do izraelskej krajiny, lebo tí, čo chceli vziať život dieťatku, pomreli.“
