Keď rozpustil zástupy, vystúpil na vrch do samoty modliť sa. Keď sa zvečerilo, bol tam sám. Čln bol vzdialený od brehu už mnoho stadií a zmietali ním vlny, pretože vietor fúkal proti nim. Počas štvrtej nočnej stráže prišiel k nim, kráčajúc po mori. Keď ho učeníci videli kráčať po mori, prestrašení hovorili: „To je prízrak!“ A od strachu kričali. Ale Ježiš sa im hneď prihovoril: „Vzmužte sa! Ja som to! Nebojte sa!“ Peter mu odpovedal: „Pane, ak si to ty, rozkáž mi, aby som prišiel k tebe po vode!“ On povedal: „Poď!“ Peter vystúpil z člna, kráčal po vode a šiel k Ježišovi. Ale keď videl, že vietor je silný, zľakol sa, začal sa topiť a kričal: „Pane, zachráň ma!“ Ježiš hneď vystrel ruku, chytil ho a povedal mu: „Maloverný, prečo si pochyboval?“ Len čo nastúpili do člna, vietor utíchol. Tí, čo boli v člne, klaňali sa mu a hovorili: „Naozaj si Boží Syn.“
