Nato hneď prikázal učeníkom nastúpiť do člna a ísť pred ním na druhú stranu, kým nerozpustí zástupy. Keď rozpustil zástupy, vystúpil na vrch do samoty modliť sa. Keď sa zvečerilo, bol tam sám. Čln bol vzdialený od brehu už mnoho stadií a zmietali ním vlny, pretože vietor fúkal proti nim. Počas štvrtej nočnej stráže prišiel k nim, kráčajúc po mori. Keď ho učeníci videli kráčať po mori, prestrašení hovorili: „To je prízrak!“ A od strachu kričali. Ale Ježiš sa im hneď prihovoril: „Vzmužte sa! Ja som to! Nebojte sa!“
