Chcel vidieť Ježiša, aby vedel, kto to je, no pre zástupy ho nemohol zazrieť, lebo bol malej postavy. Bežal teda napred a vyliezol na divý figovník, aby ho odtiaľ videl, lebo tadiaľ mal prechádzať. Keď Ježiš prišiel na to miesto, pozrel hore a povedal mu: „Zachej, poď chytro dolu, lebo dnes musím zostať v tvojom dome.“ On chytro zliezol a s radosťou ho prijal. Všetci, ktorí to videli, reptali: „K hriešnemu človeku si vošiel oddýchnuť.“ Ale Zachej povedal Pánovi: „Pane, polovicu svojho majetku dávam chudobným a ak som niekoho v niečom oklamal, vrátim to štvornásobne.“ Ježiš mu odpovedal: „Dnes prišla spása do tohto domu, veď aj on je Abrahámovým synom.
