Zachariáš povedal anjelovi: „Podľa čoho to poznám? Veď ja som starec a moja manželka je v pokročilom veku.“ Anjel mu odpovedal: „Ja som Gabriel, ktorý stojí pred Bohom, a má poslanie prehovoriť s tebou a odovzdať ti túto radostnú zvesť. Hľa, onemieš a nebudeš schopný prehovoriť až do dňa, keď sa to stane, lebo si neuveril mojim slovám, ktoré sa splnia vo svojom čase.“ Ľud čakal na Zachariáša a čudoval sa, že sa tak dlho zdržiava v chráme. Keď však vyšiel, nebol už schopný k nim prehovoriť. A tak spoznali, že mal v chráme videnie; robil im posunky a zostal nemý. Len čo sa skončili dni jeho kňazskej služby, odišiel domov. Po týchto dňoch jeho manželka Alžbeta počala a skrývala sa päť mesiacov. Hovorila: „Toto mi urobil Pán v dňoch, keď milostivo zhliadol, aby ma zbavil hanby pred ľuďmi.“
