Wtedy Zachariasz zapytał anioła: Po czym to poznam? Ja przecież jestem stary, a i moja żona nie jest już młodą kobietą. W odpowiedzi usłyszał: Ja jestem Gabriel, wybrany, by stawać przed Bogiem. Zostałem posłany, aby do ciebie przemówić i ogłosić ci te dobre wieści. Lecz oto stracisz mowę, nie będziesz mógł powiedzieć ani słowa aż do dnia, gdy się to stanie, za to, że nie uwierzyłeś moim słowom, które spełnią się w swoim czasie. Tymczasem lud czekał na Zachariasza i dziwił się, że tak długo przebywa w miejscu świętym. On natomiast po wyjściu nie był w stanie nic im powiedzieć. Zrozumieli więc, że miał tam widzenie, zwłaszcza że dawał im znaki i pozostawał niemy. Następnie, gdy dobiegły końca dni jego posługi, udał się do swego domu. Wkrótce jego żona Elżbieta zaszła w ciążę i przez pięć miesięcy pozostawała w ukryciu. Wówczas często powtarzała sobie: Oto, co Pan zrobił dla mnie w tych dniach, gdy okazał mi łaskę i przywrócił szacunek u ludzi.
