Gdy Jezus to usłyszał, powiedział: Ostatecznie końcem tej choroby nie będzie śmierć, lecz objawienie chwały Boga. Za jej sprawą Syn Boży będzie uwielbiony. Jezus zaś kochał Martę, jej siostrę i Łazarza. Gdy więc usłyszał, że choruje, jeszcze dwa dni pozostał tam, gdzie przebywał, a dopiero potem powiedział do uczniów: Chodźmy znów do Judei. Uczniowie zauważyli: Mistrzu! Dopiero co Żydzi próbowali Cię ukamienować, a Ty znów tam idziesz? Jezus odpowiedział: Dzień przecież składa się z dwunastu godzin. Kto chodzi za dnia, nie potknie się, gdyż widzi światło tego świata. Lecz jeśli ktoś chodzi w nocy, potknie się, ponieważ nie ma w sobie światła. Po tych słowach dodał: Łazarz, nasz przyjaciel, zasnął, ale idę zbudzić go ze snu. Wtedy uczniowie powiedzieli: Panie! Skoro zasnął, wyzdrowieje. Jezus jednak miał na myśli jego śmierć, oni natomiast myśleli, że mówi o zwykłym śnie. Wtedy Jezus powiedział im wyraźnie: Łazarz umarł. I cieszę się, że Mnie tam nie było, bo chodzi mi o was. Pragnę, byście uwierzyli. A teraz chodźmy do niego.
