We understand that God promised to preserve His Word, but that leads us to ask the question: Practically speaking, how did God preserve His Word over the centuries?
Back in ancient times, most religions and historical records were verbally passed down from one generation to the next through storytelling. The problem with storytelling is that it is dependent on the human mind and will, which is obviously flawed because of sin. Someone could forget the details of a story, embellish it to sound better than it actually was, or change something for their own selfish gain. However, when something is written down, that information is a standard that cannot be forgotten or altered.
God preserved His Word by instructing His people to write His Words down in sections. Repeatedly, God told the Old Testament prophets to write down the words that God gave to them. This recording of the words would ensure that the message could not be changed. After the words were written down, God instructed His people to copy the words of God repeatedly, to ensure there were many copies of the message. This copying further increased the certainty of preservation, because a copy that had a mistake or was altered could be compared to the multitude of other perfect manuscripts, and the flawed copy could be discarded.
God provided the perfect plan for keeping His promise of preserving His Word for every generation to come! In today’s Scripture reading, notice the words “write” and “copy” to see God’s plan to preserve His Word!
