Kill Your Pride: An 8-Day Brave Coaches Journey

DAY 5 OF 8

The Comparison Trap

From the moment we’re old enough to understand, we are taught to compare. In school, it was grades. On the playground, it was who could run the fastest. In sports, it was stats, height, and weight. As men, that scoreboard just changes: the size of our paycheck, the speed of our career success, the balance in our bank account. Comparison is woven into the fabric of our culture, but it is one of pride’s most effective weapons against your purpose.

The Brave Truth: Comparison is the thief of all joy, and it is the enemy of your unique calling.

It yanks you out of the lane God has specifically designed for you and tempts you to run someone else’s race. Imagine training your whole life as a 400-meter sprinter—you're built for it, you've put in the work—but on race day, you see the javelin thrower getting all the attention and decide to jump into his event. You're not equipped for it. You haven’t trained for it. You will only experience frustration and failure. Yet, this is what we do when we allow comparison to distract us from our own assignment.

Don’t let what someone else is doing—or what you think they're doing based on their social media highlight reel—prevent you from staying focused on what you've been called to do. Consider the example of a pro golfer who spends eight hours a day, for months on end, just chipping. You can't compare your golf game to his because you haven't put in that focused effort. But you can ask the more important question: What is the parallel in my life? What is the one thing God is asking me to put that level of dedication into to become the best in my lane?

What God says about you is the only thing that truly matters. He isn't comparing you to anyone else. He has a unique race marked out just for you. Your job is not to be better than the man next to you; it's to be the best version of yourself, fully obedient to the path God has set before you. It's you vs. you. Run your race. Stay in your lane.

Action Steps:

  1. Identify Your Lane: Take time today to write down what you believe your specific assignment is from God in this season. What race are you supposed to be running?
  2. Declare a Comparison Fast: For the next 24 hours, actively refuse to compare yourself to others. When the thought arises, replace it with a prayer of gratitude for your own journey.
  3. Define Your "Extra Effort": Based on your unique lane, what is one area where you need to put in focused, disciplined effort to excel in your calling? Create a tangible plan to do it this week.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Where does comparison show up most often in your life—career, family, finances, or personal achievements?
  2. Whose approval are you really chasing? Is it God's, or the approval of people around you?
  3. What is one thing you can do today to celebrate someone else's success without comparing it to your own?
