DAY 2 OF 7

The Origin of Work and the Cultural Mandate

Long before there were offices, apps, robotics or artificial intelligence, there was a garden. And into that garden, God placed the first human, not to lounge, but to work. Eden wasn’t just paradise; it was a place with purpose. This tells us something profound: work isn’t a curse—it’s part of God’s original blessing.

Genesis 2:15 uses two Hebrew words that offer a deeper perspective on our work. The first is ʿābad (עָבַד), translated as “to work.” It also means to serve, cultivate, or labour. Interestingly, its related noun avodah is used throughout Scripture for work and worship. That’s no coincidence. In God’s design, work and worship are deeply connected. You are participating in something sacred when you give your best, whether in coding, caregiving, teaching, planning, or problem-solving. You’re not just working; you’re worshipping.

The second word is shāmar (שָׁמַר), meaning to take care of, to guard, to steward. Work isn’t just about production; it’s about presence. To shāmar your work means to approach it with attentiveness and care—to honour what’s been entrusted to you, whether it’s people, projects, or resources. It’s a call to treat your work as something holy, not just a list of tasks.

Together, ʿābad and shāmar form a beautiful picture: work is sacred service and mindful stewardship.

This foundational idea flows into what theologians call the Cultural Mandate in Genesis 1:28: “Be fruitful...fill the earth and subdue it.” This isn’t just about growing families—it’s about growing culture. God invites us to partner with Him in shaping the world: building systems, writing stories, designing homes, managing data, and solving problems. Yes, even the spreadsheets, strategy meetings, and meals that are cooked in the kitchen. It's all part of cultivating creation.

So, what does this mean for you today?

It means your work matters—eternally. You’re not just earning a salary or meeting performance goals, important as they are. You are carrying forward God’s original call to serve and steward. You are reflecting His image in how you lead meetings, manage the home, clean spaces, or care for others. Whether anyone else notices or not, God does.

Your desk, your studio, your classroom, your laboratory, your home—they’re all modern-day gardens. And your hands, when offered in faith, continue Eden’s story.

So don’t leave your faith at the door when you walk into work. Bring your whole self. Your work is spiritual. It’s a way of worship. A way to love God, serve people, and care for His world.

Prayer:

God of Creation, thank You for the gift of work. Teach me to serve like You—to ʿābad with diligence and to shāmar with care. Help me see my work not as a burden, but a holy calling. Whether I lead, support, create, or maintain, may I honour You in all I do today. Amen.
