Impulses for the Way: 30 Days on the Camino De Santiago

DAY 2 OF 30

Why Do People Climb Mountains?

Start your time with several deep breaths. Try to let go of what you were doing right before this and whatever you have to do after this time. Just breathe.

In the video, Barrett compared the life of faith to a long walk on an ancient path, saying, “Now, you may not be thinking of your Camino as a life of faith, but for the followers of Jesus, faith is following an ancient path of sorts, trusting the voices and experiences of those who have gone before us.”

Take a few moments to pause, listen, and consider: What are some of the voices and experiences of those who have gone before that are speaking to me now?

Slowly read this verse from Hebrews 12, looking for a word or phrase that seems especially relevant for you today. “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us…” (Hebrews 12:1, ESV).

Pause and ask: What word or phrase is resonating with me?

Read the passage again, prayerfully asking the Holy Spirit, “Show me why that word or phrase is standing out.”

Now consider: Is there something from the voices of those who have gone before that is helpful in showing me how to keep on this pilgrimage of faith in Jesus?

Share that realization with God in prayer.

About this Plan

Impulses for the Way: 30 Days on the Camino De Santiago

What if following Jesus was like walking the Camino de Santiago—dusty paths, vineyards, mountain passes, and ancient Roman roads? *Impulses for the Way* is a 30-day, video devotional filmed across 800km of this historic pilgrimage. Barrett Harkins, who lives in Santiago and serves pilgrims daily, shares stories from the trail, Scripture reflections, and prayers that explore restlessness, forgiveness, hope, and radical grace. Whether you’re on the Camino or navigating daily life, these short videos invite you to take the next step with Jesus—listening to the Spirit’s whispers and remembering this truth: you never walk alone.
