Jesus Heals Many Sick and Oppressed in the Evening

On the very same day on which Peter’s mother-in-law was healed, Jesus healed many others. The Bible records these healings happening in the evening. It may seem like an insignificant detail, but it's worth examining closely.

All of nature has various systems and processes that occur over 24 hours. Some of the physical, mental, and behavioural changes that occur over one day are collectively referred to as a circadian rhythm. The system that controls this circadian rhythm is commonly referred to as a biological clock. Darkness and light are the two primary influences on circadian rhythms, alongside stress, temperature, nutrition, and other factors. The point is that every moment of every day is in God’s hands. For many, after sundown, they struggle with feeling low, unproductive, discouraged because of exhaustion, loneliness, recurrent illness and spiritual oppression. For those who are older, in the evening of their life, so to speak, they find it harder to live with purpose due to retirement, an ageing body, and a slower mind. Many find it hard to sleep at night because of night terrors, insomnia or late-night shifts at work. This passage is for everyone who finds themself struggling with their “evenings”.

It's a reminder that Jesus is close to you by day and by night. He doesn’t leave you alone when you’re ageing, He assures you that He will carry you into your old age. For those who struggle with a spiritual, physical or mental heaviness in the evenings, be assured that your Saviour sits with you and holds you through it all.

Jesus didn’t just meet the sick or the oppressed; He healed them with a word and a touch! He can do the same for you. You don’t have to dread the evenings anymore when you know that God watches over you constantly, and you are never outside His care. Like the prophet Isaiah prophesied, He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases, which means He even took on the issues that afflict us emotionally and spiritually.
