Social Justice

DAY 1 OF 5

What they said

Read Micah 6:8. Then in Mark 12:30–31, Jesus says: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: “Love your neighbour as yourself.” (NIV)There is no commandment greater than these’.

I’m sorry, I can’t do it. I have an embarrassingly unsophisticated and theologically dull take on this… and MANY wise people have much wiser things to say than I. Does this technically count as a ‘devotion’ if I just write, What they said!’

But if we park the politics, semantics, or even personal experience hovering over the words ‘social justice’, isn’t it just loving people like Jesus? It’s oversimplification, but isn’t it overly simple? We’ll need wisdom and discernment, and we’re living this side of heaven so bad stuff happens, and some good things are seriously broken. Justice is simply a practical expression of God’s character. It’s on-brand.

There are so many amazing organisations filled with and supported by people who love like Jesus. Here are three:

IJM: Partnering with local communities to build a more just world where everyone can expect to be safe and protected.

CBM: Working alongside people with disabilities who live in the world’s poorest places.

Micah: Empowering Australian Christians to advocate on the most urgent global justice issues facing our world today.
