Hope Now: 27 Days to Peace, Healing, and Justice

DAY 22 OF 27

The kingdom is a life transformation

Given the teachings of Jesus, the writings of New Testament authors, and the early church fathers, how do evangelism and social ministry blend? Can these two areas of focus represent two sides of the same coin, as evidenced in Luke 10:1-9?

Those who champion evangelism over social ministry may cite the priority of the soul in the next life as the top priority for ministry. Those who champion social ministry may prioritize the daily needs of the person in the here and now with utmost importance. Jesus valued both, teaching and modeling this approach.

He raises the bar of what a transformed life from among the disadvantaged would look like. We expect to see life transformation through our work at Buckner because we are bringing the King’s kingdom near.

What happens to a life broken by sin when the kingdom comes near? What does life transformation look like when the King and His kingdom connect with a wounded person in need of peace, healing, and justice? A metamorphosis takes place. Everything changes.

Is it possible to experience the transformed life now, or do we have to wait until we reach the afterlife?

Is the kingdom meant for today, or is it something we look forward to?

Jesus said, “Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you'" (Luke 10:9 NIV). His command points to a present-tense reality. Kingdom reality is not so much the idea of a kingdom as in a place but the presence of the King. He is with us now, but there is more of Jesus to come when we are with Him forever.

How are things different when Jesus is with us? He has come near to us and wants to come near to others, yet His coming is not all that it will be when we are with Him forever. Since we are not in a perfect state of the kingdom in this life, we have more kingdom living to look forward to.

To some degree, the kingdom is here now, and we also look forward to a final time when we will be in a “state of the kingdom” reality in the presence of the King every day and in every situation.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Is the kingdom possible now? How?
  • How can you and your friends participate in the kingdom now?

About this Plan

Hope Now: 27 Days to Peace, Healing, and Justice

Is there a wall between meeting the practical needs of people and meeting their spiritual needs? Can you only meet one or the other? Learn how these needs are two sides of the same coin and how both are not only doable but must be done. Additionally, experience how to find your kingdom purpose - and how that can bring hope and healing to others.
