Hope Now: 27 Days to Peace, Healing, and Justice

DAY 19 OF 27

Jesus, the King

Jesus never claimed the title of king during his ministry. Yet others claimed this title for him – you can read it all throughout Scripture.

Even though Jesus didn’t claim this title, one can safely assume he was and is Jesus the King. If he is your king, the one who died for your salvation and your life, would you not be willing to give up your life for him? Jesus taught, “For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it” (Matthew 16:25 NIV).

It’s counterintuitive from a human perspective to find life by first losing it as a follower of Jesus. Yet this is the way of Jesus the King. Giving up one’s life in service of the King leads to a discovery of the true meaning of life itself. You find life when you lose it for your King.

While Jesus didn’t claim the title of king, he taught about the kingdom of God and often referred to the kingdom of God as “my kingdom” (John 18:36 NIV). If we’re to know Jesus as the king, what would that mean for us as his subjects? How would we regard him? How would we serve him? How would we seek to obey him? We know Jesus is King, but what do we know about his kingdom?

Question for Reflection:

  • What does the kingdom mean to you?
