Taste and See
Salt and Light
Matthew 5:13-16 THE MESSAGE
[Jesus said,] “Let me tell you why you are here. You’re here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness? You’ve lost your usefulness and will end up in the garbage.
“Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house;be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.”
ponder this
Salt gives flavor; it enhances and preserves food. Light helps us see and be seen. We are called to be salt and light, to taste and see on this journey with God as we help others savor the goodness of God. As Christ’s followers, we are invited to reflect on the characteristics that flavor Jesus’ ministry with God’s love, compassion, grace, and truth! Open your senses and savor God’s presence in your life today.
for reflection
- Have you ever lost your sense of taste? How did it change your experience of daily life?
- What joyful or good things does God want you to notice more closely and savor more deeply?
- How might you shine more goodness and give more flavor (i.e., be salt and light) in the world around you?
sensory cue
At your next meal, practice mindful eating. Whether alone or in the presence of others, take a breath and look at your plate before you begin eating. Chew mindfully and on purpose. Place your fork down between bites as you chew, and savor the flavor and textures of your food. Notice not only what you taste as you eat but also what you see and smell and how it sounds when you chew. Use all your God-given senses to practice eating presently and mindfully, showing gratitude for God’s goodness with each bite.
closing prayer
Spirit,
Help me savor and appreciate the goodness you bring to the world around me. Please show me how to be salt and light.
Amen.
