Embracing our sonship in Christ changes everything.
Through the story of Zechariah 3 and personal reflections, let’s dive into the powerful concept of sonship—understanding our identity as sons and daughters of the Most High God.
Key Topics:
- The Gift of Sonship: God’s love is not something we earn but a gift of grace. Like Joshua in Zechariah 3, we stand before God in our “filthy clothes” (our sin), but He chooses to forgive and cleanse us. When we accept Christ, God gives us a new identity, and we are no longer defined by sin but by grace.
- God Chooses Us: God thought about us long before we ever thought about Him. John 15:16 and Ephesians 2:8–9 remind us that salvation and sonship are God’s decisions. They are not based on our works.
- Rejection vs. Acceptance: Rejection can deeply affect our self-worth, but when we understand we are accepted by God, rejection loses its power. Just as Jesus offered the woman at the well a new identity, He offers us the same—grace, forgiveness, and love.
- Living Out Our Sonship: Our new identity changes the way we live, interact with others, and carry the presence of God. Romans 8:38–39 reassures us that nothing can separate us from the love of God. As sons and daughters of God, we are carriers of His favor and hope, transforming the atmosphere around us.
Personal Reflection:
- Reflect on your identity. How do you currently see yourself? Are you living in the fullness of your identity as a child of God, or are there areas where you struggle with feelings of rejection or inadequacy?
- How has understanding your sonship in Christ changed the way you view your relationship with God?
- Have you ever struggled with trying to earn God’s favor or love? How does it feel to know that God’s love is unconditional and based on His grace alone?
- Reflect on times when you’ve faced rejection. How did it affect your self-worth and behavior? How does knowing that God fully accepts you change your perspective on rejection?
Group Discussion:
- Discuss the vision of Joshua in Zechariah 3. How does God’s act of removing Joshua’s filthy clothes and giving him new garments illustrate His grace and the gift of sonship?
- In what ways does understanding that God chose us (rather than us choosing Him) impact how we live out our faith? How does this knowledge affect your confidence in your relationship with God?
- Share a time when you felt rejected and how that affected you. How can understanding your identity in Christ help you overcome feelings of rejection in the future?
- How does knowing that you are a son or daughter of God change the way you interact with the world? Have you noticed shifts in your life as you grow in your understanding of this identity?
Practical Application:
- Embrace your new identity. Start each day by reminding yourself of your new identity in Christ. You are not defined by your mistakes or failures but by God’s love and grace. You are a child of the Most High God.
- Let go of rejection. If feelings of rejection or insecurity are holding you back, take time today to reflect on God’s acceptance of you. Whenever feelings of rejection arise, combat them with the truth that you are loved and accepted by God.
- Walk in the favor of God. Recognize that as a child of God, you carry His presence wherever you go. Today, intentionally live out your identity by bringing hope, peace, and change to the environments around you. When you walk into a room, know that the atmosphere shifts because you carry the presence of God.
Memory Verse:
"For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, neither angels nor principalities nor powers, neither things present nor things to come, neither height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
—Romans 8:38–39, MEV
