The Anchor of Your Faith
It’s often said that we’re either going through a storm, about to face one, or just coming out of one.
In every storm, our faith is tested. The real question is, Where is our faith anchored? Just as a ship needs an anchor in order to stay secure during a storm, we need our faith anchored in God. Without this anchor, our faith can be tossed around by life’s winds, leaving us vulnerable. Today’s focus is on the importance of having our faith anchored in Christ and explains how we can weather every storm through Him.
Key Topics:
- Faith Needs an Anchor: Without something to hold on to, faith can lead to spiritual instability. Having the right anchor is essential if we want to stand firm during life’s storms. Jesus is our anchor.
- Two Ways of Enduring Tests: The Lord showed me that there are two ways we go through tests of faith—without an anchor, and with Christ as our anchor. When we go through tests without faith that is anchored in Christ, life’s storms can leave us feeling lost and overwhelmed. But when our faith is anchored in Jesus, we have the strength and peace to face any trial, knowing He is unchanging and faithful.
- Lukewarm Faith: It’s not enough to just acknowledge God occasionally. True discipleship requires a deep, daily commitment to follow Jesus, not just going through the motions.
- The Purpose of Trials: Trials are meant to strengthen our faith and draw us closer to Christ. Whether we go through them unanchored or anchored, tests are used by God to shape us into the image of His Son.
Personal Reflection:
- Reflect on your current season. Are you currently in a storm, coming out of one, or about to face one? How do you feel?
- Have you ever felt that your faith was drifting or uncertain during tough times? What served as your anchor during that season—relationships, material possessions, or routines? How did that help or fail you?
- I experienced a profound transformation after having an encounter with Jesus at nineteen years old. Think about your own experiences with Jesus. Was there a time when you realized you weren’t going to just believe in God but fully surrender to Him? What changed when your faith became more personal?
Group Discussion:
- Share a time when you felt overwhelmed by life’s storms. How did you handle it?
- Why do you think God allows us to go through tests in life? How do these tests shape our character and faith?
- I talk about two ways we endure tests of faith: without an anchor and with Christ as our anchor. Share examples of when you went through tests in either of these ways in your own life. How did your faith change as a result?
- What might having “faith without an anchor” look like in a person’s life? How would it affect their emotional and/or spiritual stability?
- How can we move from being “lukewarm” to having a more committed and passionate faith in Christ?
- What are some practical ways we can ensure that our faith remains anchored in Christ, especially during difficult times?
Practical Application:
- Anchor your faith in Christ. Make sure your faith is anchored in Jesus, not just in religious routines or superficial beliefs. Seek a deeper relationship with Him. Spend time in prayer, study the Bible, and actively follow His teachings.
- Embrace the storms. Instead of avoiding or complaining about the storms, learn to embrace them as opportunities for growth. Trust that God is using them to strengthen your faith and deepen your relationship with Him.
- Be committed. Reflect on your level of commitment to Jesus. Are you just going through the motions, or are you all in, surrendering every part of your life to Him? Take steps to grow in your faith and take up your cross daily.
- Build your foundation. Strengthen your spiritual foundation. Read the Bible daily.
Memory Verse:
“You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.”
—Isaiah 26:3, MEV
