The Refining
Just as gold is heated in fire to remove impurities, we are often placed in “fiery” trials that reveal hidden things in our hearts.
The heat in these seasons exposes fears, pride, bitterness, and other impurities, allowing God to purify us and make us more like Christ. One analogy that illustrates this concept is the sauna. In a sauna, the intense heat opens your pores, causing sweat to bring impurities to the surface. Spiritually, when we are in the Refiner’s fire, the heat of those trials opens the “pores” of our hearts and causes the impurities to rise to the surface—things we may not have been aware of, such as fear or unforgiveness. This process is not comfortable, but it is necessary for growth. Today, we will explore how trials and hardships are like the refining fire that purifies gold.
Key Topics:
- Refining Through Trials: Trials are like fire, revealing the impurities in our hearts. The heat of these trials forces us to confront areas of our lives that need to be purified, just like heat in a sauna causes impurities to rise to the surface.
- God’s Purpose in the Crushing: In much the same way gold must be heated to be purified, God uses trials to purify our faith and remove what doesn’t belong. This process is not easy, but it is necessary for spiritual growth.
- Emptying Ourselves for God’s Filling: Just like a vessel must be emptied to be filled, we need to empty ourselves of pride, unforgiveness, and distractions so that God can fill us with His presence.
- The Role of Discipleship: The Israelites needed to let go of their Egyptian mindset, and many of us need to let go of old habits and ways of thinking. What are some old mindsets or behaviors you need to surrender to God?
- Ministering Through Brokenness: As the crushing of olives produces oil, our brokenness allows God to create something beautiful and useful for His kingdom. Our trials can equip us to comfort others in their struggles.
Personal Reflection:
- Think about a time when you faced a personal struggle or trial. How did it feel? What came to the surface in your heart during that time? Were there emotions, fears, or attitudes you didn’t realize were there before? Reflect on how those moments of heat or pressure might have been God’s way of refining your heart and faith.
- What impurities in your heart have trials revealed?
- How do you respond when life gets uncomfortable or “heated”?
- In what areas are you resisting God’s refining fire?
Group Discussion:
- The heat in a sauna opens your pores and causes impurities to rise to the surface. How is this similar to the trials we face in life? What kind of impurities might God be bringing to the surface in your life through trials?
- In 1 Peter 1:6–7, Peter compares trials to the process of refining gold in fire. How does the analogy of the heat and pressure of trials bring clarity to how we grow spiritually?
- The heat of the sauna is not meant to harm the body but to cleanse it. Similarly, the trials we face are not meant to destroy us but to purify us. How can we trust that God’s purpose in our trials is for our good, even when we feel uncomfortable?
- In the same way, a clogged sink prevents water from flowing freely, sometimes our hearts are blocked by sin, fear, or pride. How can we identify the “clogs” in our lives and allow God to remove them so His Spirit can flow freely?
Practical Application:
- Embrace the heat. Just as stepping into a sauna might be uncomfortable at first, embrace the discomfort of trials, knowing God is using them to refine and purify you. Ask God to help you see His purpose in these trials and trust Him in the process.
- Identify the impurities. Reflect on areas of your heart where fear, pride, or unforgiveness might be hiding. Ask God to bring these impurities to the surface so He can remove them and make you more like Christ.
- Encourage yourself in the Lord. Reflect on how God has used trials in your life to refine and purify you. Pray that you will be willing to embrace the heat and allow God to change you through it.
Memory Verse:
“...in order that the genuineness of your faith, which is more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tried by fire, may be found to result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”
—1 Peter 1:7, MEV
