Choices

DAY 3 OF 5

What’s the Hurry?

There are many types of decision-making, but for the sake of time, we’ll touch on two: spontaneous and impatient. At times, we make choices on the fly without first thinking them through (spontaneous). Other times, we make choices purely out of boredom, with a mindset that doing something is better than doing nothing (impatience). Both decision types have a common thread: the inability to wait.

Jesus told the apostles to wait for the promise, which was the baptism of the Holy Spirit, in Acts 1:4-5 (NKJV): “And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, ‘which,’ He said, ‘you have heard from Me; for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.’” Let’s not forget that the high priest, along with the spiritual leaders of the day, had just recently crucified Jesus. It would be safe to assume they were looking for the apostles as well. Then, just before Jesus ascends into Heaven, He says, “Hey guys! BTW, don’t leave Jerusalem, but wait for the promise.” I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t want to be anywhere near Jerusalem. Still, they chose to be obedient and waited in the upper room for the baptism of the Holy Spirit. And when He (Holy Spirit) fell upon them, it changed everything.

It’s interesting to note that while they were waiting, they were also praying. They weren’t planning their next mission trip, or gathering donations to feed the poor, or any of the number of preparations that needed to be attended to. The Bible says in Acts 1:11 (NKJV), “These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication.”

When faced with difficult choices, try not to be spontaneous or impatient, but simply wait. The best place to be is where Jesus told you to be, waiting in prayer for the promise He gave you.
