KNOW JESUS, KNOW HIS STORY: 8-Day Easter Reading Planਨਮੂਨਾ

Day 3: Jesus Curses a Fig Tree
As we reflect on the journey that leads us to Easter, we encounter a remarkable moment in the Gospel reading, where Jesus curses a fig tree. Jesus uses the fig tree as a striking example. It looked good on the outside, but it had no fruit to offer, representing a vibrant life that lacked real spiritual growth. Jesus teaches His disciples that true faith needs to be more than just belief; it should inspire actions that reflect God’s intentions for us.
This event occurs shortly after His triumphant entry into Jerusalem, setting the stage for the events of Holy Week. The following day, as Jesus’ disciples pass by the same tree, they are astonished to find that it has completely withered down to its roots.
At first glance, this story might seem perplexing; why would Jesus curse a fig tree for not bearing fruit out of season? However, this narrative is rich with symbolism and serves as a profound lesson about the nature of faith and what it means to be genuinely fruitful in our lives. The fig tree represents the spiritual state of those who may appear outwardly healthy and flourishing but lack actual vitality and purpose.
Through this incident, Jesus emphasises that faith is not merely about appearances or rituals but the inner transformation that leads to genuine, fruitful living. This poignant moment invites us to examine our own lives and consider whether we are bearing the fruits of faith, love, joy, and good works as we prepare to celebrate Easter.
Jesus highlights the significance of faith and prayer, saying, “Have faith in God. Truly, I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them” (Mark 11:22-23). This kind of faith isn’t just about expecting miracles; it’s about trusting God entirely and aligning our lives with His purpose. As we prepare ourselves for Easter, let’s take a moment to reflect on our own lives. Are we producing the fruit that indeed shows our faith in Christ? Are we living in ways that honour God and serve those around us? Let’s pray for a faith that is strong and meaningful, producing acts of love, kindness, and forgiveness in our everyday lives.
Know Him More:
- Trust in God’s Faithfulness: Reflect on areas of doubt in your life. Open your heart to God and ask Him to strengthen your trust in Him. Remember His faithfulness and lean into prayer and Scripture to remind you that He is always with you.
- Fruitfulness: Pause and reflect on the fruit you’re bearing in your life. Today, take a step to reflect His love, patience, and kindness through your actions. Ask God to help you grow deeper in faith and to cultivate the fruits of the Spirit in your heart, drawing you closer to Him.
