Day 5: The Lord Is Your Protector

Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
—Psalm 121:4

As mothers, our instinct to protect our children is innate. Yet there are times when we, the protectors, also need protection. Like a mama bear seeks refuge from storms, we too need protection from the external world, but also from the internal battles that rage within our minds. But where can we find this kind of protection?

Psalm 121:4 serves as a comforting reminder that our sovereign God is ever vigilant over his people. Unlike us, he never grows weary or distracted. His protection is not sporadic, but a constant, unwavering presence in our lives. He is always ready to intervene with his mighty power.

In his beautiful priestly prayer for us, Jesus said, “While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost” (John 17:12). The night he prayed that prayer was the same night that he was betrayed. In the garden, Jesus neither slumbered nor slept when our salvation hung in the balance. He stayed awake all night, laboring in prayer about his impending death, which would provide the ultimate, eternal protection for his people. With one mighty blow, Christ’s death paid the penalty for our sin, broke Satan’s hold, and defeated death’s victory over us.

Even when you walk through valleys, you can be confident that “he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.” Just as God protected and guided his chosen people, he also protects and guides each one of us. You are in his perfect care and under his sovereign protection.
