Lift Your Eyes: 10 Days of Beholding Christ in Motherhood

DAY 3 OF 10

Day 3: The Lord Is Your Provider

My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
Psalm 121:2

"From where does my help come?” the psalmist asks. He immediately answers his own question by singing in the face of fear: “My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.” This answer reflects his faith that the Creator of the cosmos—a God of boundless power—is able to provide all he needs for his journey.

In the book of Genesis, Abraham and Sarah feared they would never have a child; however, in their old age, God promised that Sarah would indeed have a son. Her response? She did not sing, like the psalmist. Instead, she laughed. Her reproductive years had long passed, and now she is to have a child?

But is anything too hard for the Lord? The first cries of baby Isaac—the child God promised to Abraham and Sarah—prove that the answer is no. Despite Sarah’s old age and lack of faith, the Lord still fulfilled his promise because his promise was not dependent on her, but on him. And despite Sarah’s initial unbelief, God was true to his promise to provide a much-longed-for child (Genesis 21:1-7). Little did Sarah know that God was not merely providing for her desire to be a mother: Through Isaac’s lineage, Jesus, the long-awaited Messiah, would be born. Through these seemingly impossible circumstances, God was miraculously providing a Savior for Sarah and for the world.

This story reminds me that God’s work doesn’t hinge on my great faith. Whether I am singing or weeping or doubting or laughing, he has already provided an answer in Jesus, our ultimate provider. While on earth, Jesus not only provided for physical needs like bread and water, but also for spiritual needs, like forgiving sins and casting out demons. Even now, he is our provider: He provides peace when we’re restless, escape when we’re facing temptation, and help when we’re hurting. He is always doing far more than what we can see on the surface.

When we find ourselves on the verge of laughing in disbelief in the face of God’s promises, let’s remember his perfect record of faithfulness. Our God has never once failed to keep his promise. Knowing this, we can be confident that he will always care for us.
